This group of charts displays the world's nations according to the top two haplogroups within each country by population. Countries sharing the same top two haplogroups in the same order are the same color. The numerical coding is merely a categorical designation and the color coding is intended to highlight contrasts. The world view is followed by regional views. Please note that similarity of color carries no informational meaning (to confirm categorical sameness please hover over the countries and compare the numerical coding). The table beneath the charts shows the coding key (please note that numerical coding in the regional Asia chart diverges from the rest so as to accentuate chromatic contrasts). There is currently insufficient data available to complete these charts for the following nations: Bhutan, Paraguay, and Thailand.

Data Sources and Notes

Many interactive ways of looking at the data are available. The complete data file is available in a variety of formats such as CSV, XLS, or MDB.

Haplogroup naming follows the ISOGG 2012 classification system: Notes: 1) In the above charts, haplogroup letter statistics include all sub-groups; sub-haplogroup letter statistics include only that sub-group; e.g., a 'G' in the haplogroup chart includes all G sub-branches (M201 marker plus all progeny; G, G1, G2, etc.), while a 'G' in the sub-haplogroup chart includes only the G as a sub-haplogroup (i.e., M201 marker only); 2) Due to varying levels of granularity in the studies combined in these data, there is some ambiguity in the sub-haplogroup results (study X may have taken its haplogrouping to the level of G2a3a, study Y only to G2a, and study Z only to G); the haplogroup results are therefore more definitive than the sub-haplogroup results in the current state of the data. Please see methods page for detailed information about data sources, ambiguities, errors, and risks inherent in this type of study.
